  • Repudiated at the Polls, National Democrats Continue to Push Gun Control

Recent weeks have seen a heated debate involving national Democratic Party figures over how to approach the issue of abortion in a manner that would allow the party to be more competitive in portions of the country dominated by Donald Trump and the Republicans in the 2016 election. Such soul-searching is to be expected for a party that does not hold either chamber of Congress or the presidency. However, one issue that appears to be off the table in any Democratic recalibration is the national party’s zealous support for further gun restrictions.

This intransigence was highlighted by two recent pieces of radical gun control legislation.

First, on July 27, Rep. Anthony Brown (D-Md.), along with 12 cosponsors, introduced H.R.3458. The text of the legislation has yet to be made available to Government Publishing Office, but is described as a bill

To require certain semiautomatic pistols manufactured, imported, or sold by Federal firearms licensees to be capable of microstamping ammunition, and the prohibit [sic] the removal, obliteration, or alteration of the microstamped code or microstamping capability of a firearm.

An accompanying press release noted that “The bill prohibits federal firearms licensees from manufacturing, selling, or transferring semiautomatic handguns, unless those handguns are capable of microstamping ammunition or face gradual fines.” An earlier version of the bill introduced in the 110th Congress made clear that this restriction would apply to all semiautomatic handguns manufactured or imported after the effective date of the legislation.

Microstamping is a flawed and expensive method in which certain firearms components, typically the firing pin, are etched with a serial number that is transferred to an ammunition cartridge when the gun is fired. NRA and others have identified numerous problems with this technology, including the fact that it is easily defeated with common hand tools or repeated use of the firearm, and would require an onerous system of registering firearm components. Further, the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute has estimated the cost of implementing this technology at $200 per firearm.

Not to be outdone, on July 28, Rep. Donald M. Payne (D-N.J.), along with 16 cosponsors, introduced H.R.3613, “To authorize the Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance to make grants to States, units of local government, and gun dealers to conduct gun buyback programs, and for other purposes” to the tune of $360 million.

To support squandering federal taxpayer dollars on gun buyback (more appropriately termed turn-in) programs in 2017 reveals a fanatical hostility towards guns and a profound disregard for sound public policy.

Since 1998, the U.S. Department of Justice has understood that gun turn-ins are ineffective. A National Institute of Justice document from that year titled, “Preventing Crime: What Works, What Doesn’t, What’s Promising” put gun turn-ins at the top of its list of “What Doesn’t Work.” The NIJ reiterated this point in a 2013 memo that concluded, “Gun buybacks are ineffective as generally implemented.” Further, some of the most radical anti-gun researchers, including Jon Vernick from the Michael Bloomberg-bankrolled Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, have admitted that turn-ins do not diminish violent crime.

Perhaps inspired by her Democratic colleagues in the House of Representatives, on August 10, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) took to Twitter to call for a renewal of the federal “assault weapons” ban.  The entire “assault weapon” concept is a creation of anti-gun activists who used the term to create confusion after their attempts to ban handguns had failed.  Charles Krauthammer, a proponent of gun confiscation, wrote “the only real justification [for the assault weapon ban] is not to reduce crime but to desensitize the public to the regulation of weapons in preparation for their ultimate confiscation.”  As Krauthammer predicted, the ban on so-called “assault weapons” had little effect on crime, but that has not stopped gun-control proponents like Senator Harris from calling for its renewal.

After Al Gore’s defeat in the 2000 presidential election, the national Democratic Party made a concerted effort to soften their position on gun control in order to be more competitive in parts of the country where voters put significant value on their Second Amendment rights. In his book, “My Life,” Bill Clinton pointed to NRA and gun control as a factor in Gore’s defeat.

Democrats began to tolerate candidates that deviated from left-wing anti-gun orthodoxy. In a 2005 Boston Globe article titled “Democrats Recast Gun Control Image,” then Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Rahm Emanuel was quoted as saying that their candidates “[have] got to reflect their districts.” In the three presidential election cycles following Gore’s defeat, the Democrats recognized Americans’ Second Amendment rights in their platform. President Barack Obama conspicuously avoided the issue until he had secured a second term in office, leading the Brady Campaign to issue him an “F” rating in 2010.

Despite Bill Clinton’s repeated warnings, the national Democratic Party in 2016 flouted gun owners at every turn. Hillary Clinton endorsed Australia-style gun confiscationrepeatedly denounced the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, and when pressed, refused to acknowledge that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultzrailed against guns to Democratic delegates. In the midst of the presidential election campaign, Democrat representatives threw a gun control-inspired tantrum on the floor of the U.S. House. The national Democratic Party left no doubt that the Second Amendment was on the ballot in 2016.

And once again, the Democrats suffered a devastating defeat. In the immediate aftermath, NBC’s Chuck Toddcredited NRA for giving Trump “a big assist” in his victory. Months later, political commentator Fred Barneswould write, “There are many claimants to the honor of having nudged Donald Trump over the top in the presidential election. But the folks with the best case are the National Rifle Association and the consultants who made their TV ads.”

NRA is happy to take credit for helping to defeat Hillary Clinton and for the election of pro-gun lawmakers across the country, but our efforts would not have been so salient had our opposition not so fully embraced the anti-gun agenda.

NRA is a nonpartisan organization and we continue to endorse members of any party who work to defend American gun owners. As the current marginalized national Democratic Party grapples with its agenda moving forward, it would do well to learn from its past and curtail their attacks on the Second Amendment. Wise Democratic leaders will recognize that they have been here before and that abandoning their anti-gun ambitions is an important component of their path back to power. However, with Democratic House members still offering microstamping and gun turn-in bills, there is little evidence of such wisdom.

  • NYT Caught Switching Out Documents To Fix Botched Climate Change Article

The New York Times has quietly updated its Tuesday front page article on a “sweeping” global warming report some scientists fear “would be suppressed” by the Trump administration.

TheNYT reported they had obtained an unreleased draft copy of the National Climate Assessment (NCA), which is set for release in 2018. The paper claimed the NDA draft had “not yet been made public” and “concludes that Americans are feeling the effects of climate change right now.”

However, TheNYT published a “third order draft” of the NCA that’s been available online since January. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration published the draft online in March.

The paper did not issue a formal correction by the time this article was published, and did not respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s inquiry into whether or not a correction would be issued.

  • Baltimore’s ‘nobody kill anybody’ weekend leaves at least 2 people dead

Baltimore activists’ attempt for a murder-free weekend proved to be too much to ask of the city, with at least three people shot, two of them killed, in less than 72 hours since guns were ordered to be put down.

Activist Erricka Bridgeford promoted the campaign as a “Baltimore ceasefire” and “Nobody kill anybody” weekend that began on Friday and ends Sunday night, garnering the support of thousands on social media since May.

The city made it through Friday with no shootings reported, drawing hope from participants the campaign might see some success. But by Saturday, two men — ages 24 and 37 — were shot and killed in separate incidents just hours apart, according to the Baltimore Sun. Another man, 22, also suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, FOX45 reported.

  • A vulnerable Republican senator just got brutal poll numbers after his vote on the Republican healthcare bill (Jeff Flake Hits 18% Approval!)

Just 31% of those surveyed said they would vote for Flake if the election were held immediately, compared with 47% saying they would vote for a generic Democratic opponent. No Democrat has announced plans to run for the seat.

The poll also found that 62% of Arizonans disapproved of Flake’s performance, while only 18% approved.

  • BREAKING: White House issues guidance on Trump’s transgender military ban (End Is Near for Mentally Ill in Military!)

According to multiple reports in LGBT news outlets, the White House has issued policy guidelines aimed at bringing the ranks of the military in line with President Trump’s recent tweets.

Titled, “A Guidance Policy for Open Transgender Service Phase Out,” the document has not yet been made public.

The Washington Blade reports that, “Sources familiar with the planning said it would encourage early retirement, usher out any enlisted personnel after their contract is up, and would fire trans officers up for promotion. Basically, said a source, ‘the administration wants to get rid of transgender service members as fast as they can.’”

In a series of three Tweets on July 26, President Trump said, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

Under Obama White House directives, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter ordered all branches of the military in 2016 to draft policies to allow for transgender recruits and transgender medical care.

A group of retired military top brass has offered wholehearted support to the President’s guidance, calling it “courageous.”

  • Of Course. Chicago To Sue Over Sanctuary City Funding. Good Luck With That

To the surprise of no one who’s ever listened to a single Donald Trump campaign speech, the Attorney General made an announcement last week in which he signaled that “sanctuary cities” were going to lose access to some federal grants and DoJ funding. The howls of outrage immediately followed, including various claims from the left that he can’t do that and all the usual protests over the limits of federal power. Among the cities under discussion was Chicago, famous for needing a lot of help in the law enforcement arena, but not willing to do anything to support immigration law enforcement. Mayor Rahm Emanuel wasn’t about to let a little bit of hypocrisy slow him down, though. He’s now fired back with a claim that Chicago will be going to court, suing President Trump and demanding they be given their share of the federal pork pie. (The Hill)

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel (sic) (D) plans to push back against the Trump administration’s policy withholding public safety grant money from so-called sanctuary cities by filing a federal lawsuit claiming it is illegal for the federal government to take such action.

“We’re not going to actually auction off our values as a city, so Monday morning the city of Chicago is going to court, we’re going to take the Justice Department to court based on this,” Emmanuel (sic) said during an interview on WLS radio 890 set to air Sunday, according to The Chicago Tribune.

“We find it unlawful and unconstitutional to be, as a city, coerced on a policy,” he continued.

Wait. “Unlawful and unconstitutional?” I understand that Emanuel isn’t a lawyer (he actually majored in dance) but has he spoken to any of his legal team about this? There have been any number of liberal analysts twisting and torturing the English language like a recalcitrant Gitmo detainee to find a way to say that Trump can’t do this, but their prospects are dim at best. Back when this question of withholding grant money for non-compliant cities and states first came up, even the very liberal Los Angeles Times was forced to concede that the President had the Constitutional authority to do it. (Even if they didn’t agree that he should.)

  • Politico Worries that Russia Investigation Will Boomerang on Democrats

Although the liberal media is purposely avoiding the fact that the Trump-Russia collusion investigation is, as CNN‘s Van Jones noted in a candid moment, a big “nothing burger” most of the public has already reached that conclusion. Thus far Bob Mueller and his team of Democrat-donating investigators have only come up with a quickie inconclusive 20 minute meeting between Donald Trump, Jr. and a Russian lawyer. Hardly time for “collusion.” This might explain why they are now on a fishing expedition for matters completely unrelated to Russia.

Meanwhile the public appears to be fed up with the Russia investigation to nowhere and the Mueller fishing expedition. As a result Politico is now worried that this will boomerang upon the Democrats in upcoming elections. Politico‘s David Siders worries about this today in Democrats fear Russia probe blowback

  • Mueller’s Investigators Are Worried They’re Going To Get Sued Photo of Jack Crowe

Department of Justice investigators purchased liability insurance to guard themselves against potential retaliatory lawsuits brought by the subjects they’re investigating as part of the Russia probe.

The Department would cover any legal fees incurred in the course of duty. However, a number of investigators opted to purchase extra protection as the probe moves further into examining President Donald Trump’s finances and those of his associates, a source familiar with the investigation told CNN.

The investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election led by special counsel Robert Mueller has reportedly expanded into examining possible financial crimes unrelated to Russian election interference.

  • NYPD ‘Powerless’ to Stop Naked Illegal Alien Panhandlers (De Blasio’s Rules)

Police in New York City expressed frustration about not being able to stop naked panhandlers from harassing the public because most of them are illegal aliens. Their status makes it difficult to enforce tickets because of Mayor de Blasio’s sanctuary city policies.

The city established “Designated Activity Zones” (DAZ) in 2016 to provide a place for “costumed characters” a place to work for tips. Some of these panhandlers, called desnudas, are nude women wearing painted on costumes. Law enforcement officers frequently decline to ticket panhandling violations because most of them are illegal aliens, the Daily Mail reported.

  • Always Do More of What the Media Forbids

The criticism of any Republican almost always grows in proportion to his effectiveness. One of the media’s principal missions is to serve as a dispensary of unsolicited and destructive advice to the GOP. And until Trump came along, the stupid party usually took it. Trump won not in spite of his utter indifference to the media’s self-serving counsel but because of it. If a Republican candidate follows the media’s advice, he typically loses; if a Republican in office takes the media’s advice, he governs fecklessly, makes no meaningful gains, and loses re-election.

Always do more of what the media forbids; always do less of whatever it counsels. Trump, who is already inclined to follow these rules, should observe them even more robustly. The media, for example, is instructing him “not to criticize Mueller.” Trump should launch even more attacks on Mueller, detailing day in and day out his conflicts of interest (which far exceed Sessions’ s insignificant meetings with the Russian ambassador) and exposing all the partisan hatchet men he has assembled to nail the Trump campaign on process crimes.

Even the media’s hair-on-fire hysterics about the prospect of a fired Mueller isn’t worth taking seriously. If Trump were to fire Mueller, the media/ruling class would throw temper tantrums for a few months, the American people would shrug (the Russian fable is white noise to them at this point), and Trump would win re-election easily. The sky would not fall, except on the cowards in the GOP who joined the Dems in calling for Trump’s impeachment.

  • Becoming disabled by choice, not chance: ‘Transabled’ people feel like impostors in their fully working bodies

When he cut off his right arm with a “very sharp power tool,” a man who now calls himself One Hand Jason let everyone believe it was an accident.

But he had for months tried different means of cutting and crushing the limb that never quite felt like his own, training himself on first aid so he wouldn’t bleed to death, even practicing on animal parts sourced from a butcher.

“My goal was to get the job done with no hope of reconstruction or re-attachment, and I wanted some method that I could actually bring myself to do,” he told the body modification website ModBlog.

His goal was to become disabled.

People like Jason have been classified as ‘‘transabled’’ — feeling like imposters in their bodies, their arms and legs in full working order.
